As a physical therapist I’m amazed by the amount of people that continually hurt themselves by doing simple outdoor tasks like raking leaves, planting flowers, or even mowing the lawn. Bending down, lifting heavy equipment, and working on your knees are just a few of the motions performed by gardeners and outdoor workers everyday that are causing these injuries. Strains, sprains and back pain are extremely common but can easily be prevented by simply adjusting the way you do things.
Ergonomics is the study of the physical capabilities and limitations of a worker in relation to that person’s work tasks, tools and environment. Ergonomics seeks to reduce stress on the body, and increase safety, comfort and productivity. Ergonomic recommendations are fairly easy to integrate into many outdoor activities. They key is awareness and practice.
