So You Think Measuring Snow Is That Easy?

Believe it or not, there is a trick to measuring snow rather then just walking outside and sticking a ruler in the ground.  Measuring snow accurately is actually very tricky sometimes, especially in an event with such high winds.  For the most accurate total accumulation measurements a snowboard or just a piece of plywood is necessary. 

What you need to do…
First take the snowboard or plywood and lay it flat on the ground.  After it begins to snow, start measuring the accumulated snow every hour.  After each measurement, wipe off the board and wait another hour for a new measurement. You want to make sure you wipe the board clean of snow after each measurement.  Also record the measurement to the nearest tenth of an inch.  After the storm has ended now add all your measurements together and that is your total snowfall.  If it is very windy outside, it’s not a bad idea to measure a few different spots and figure out an average measurement. If you do this correctly and you are an official storm Spotter for the NWS you can send in your data!!!
