Weekly Drought Update: April 25th

Connecticut may not be in an official drought yet, but as of this week, more than two-thirds of the state is reporting “abnormally dry” conditions.

Despite a snowy and active winter season, the weather has turned rather dry over the past month or so. Although the current month is known for “April showers,” there really has not been a whole lot of rain.

A cold front last night was moisture-starved and barely dropped any measurable rain. Across the state, rainfall totals ranged from a trace to just 0.07″ at Windham Airport.

For the month of April, Connecticut averages about 4 inches of rainfall. To get technical, that’s 3.72″ at Windsor Locks and 4.13″ at Stratford.
So far this month, Stratford has only recorded 1.08″ of rain, with 1.67″ at Windsor Locks.
With little to no rain expected to finish out the month of April, rainfall amounts could finish the month anywhere from 50 to 75% below average.

Driest months of April since 1949 for Stratford:
1. 1985 – 0.69″
2. 1963 – 0.84″
3. 2013 – 1.08″
4. 2001 – 1.57″
5. 1988 – 1.59″

Driest months of April since 1949 for Windsor Locks:
1. 1999 – 1.10″
2. 2001 – 1.22″
3. 2010 – 1.30″
4. 1966 – 1.38″
5. 1978 – 1.51″
6. 1985 – 1.54″
7. 1986 – 1.55″
8. 1963 – 1.57″
9. 2013 – 1.67″
10. 1965 – 2.14″

It looks like Stratford will finish with a Top 3 driest April on record, with Windsor Locks holding onto a Top 9 spot.

How’s the forecast look?
Well, very little precipitation is expected over the next seven (7) days. A few sprinkles are possible in some areas on Friday, but beyond that, there’s a relatively high probability of little or no precipitation through the middle of next week. This may cause drought conditions to set in by next week’s update.
