Weekly Drought Update: May 2nd

ct dm e64474a0d5ba050d Weekly Drought Update: May 2nd
Connecticut has been in a dry pattern since late winter and now the entire state is reporting “abnormally dry” conditions. The next step up is a moderate drought.

April, which is typically known for showery weather, was actually fairly dry. Northern Connecticut had a moderately dry April, but the shoreline was very dry. The Stratford area finished with their 3rd driest April on record dating back to 1949.

Driest months of April since 1949 for Stratford:
1. 1985 – 0.69″
2. 1963 – 0.84″
3. 2013 – 1.09″
4. 2001 – 1.57″
5. 1988 – 1.59″
Average – 4.13″
Departure, -3.04″

Driest months of April since 1949 for Windsor Locks:
1. 1999 – 1.10″
2. 2001 – 1.22″
3. 2010 – 1.30″
4. 1966 – 1.38″
5. 1978 – 1.51″
6. 1985 – 1.54″
7. 1986 – 1.55″
8. 1963 – 1.57″
9. 2013 – 1.76″
10. 1965 – 2.14″
Average – 3.72″
Departure, -2.05″

Perhaps the most impressive stat to me was that Windsor Locks recorded no rainfall for each of the last 10 days of April. That string of rain-less days is up to 11 straight through yesterday and I expect it to continue.

How’s the forecast look?
Well, there’s no precipitation expected for at least the next six (6) days. High pressure remains in control for our area. Some clouds increase tonight into early Friday, but the probability of any rain is very low. There is a slight possibility of a few sprinkles, but a system passing well east of Cape Cod has very little moisture to work with.
A cut-off low is forecast to gradually move eastward into next week. This could potentially bring us a few showers towards the middle or end of next week. Even so, significant rain is not expected from that system.
