Top Athletes Skate at Foxwoods Ice Rink

The winter season is officially upon us, and Foxwoods Resort Casino ushered in the season with the grand opening of its ice rink and outdoor patio. The family-orientated environment was a winter wonderland, and a perfect way to get in some fitness during the cold weather season. SportzEdge on the Scene host Erika Wachter recaps the event.

As the ribbon was cut…the magic of the season came alive. Larger than life ornaments…and thousands of lights illuminated the night sky.

At the center of it all, was Olympic Figure Skater Nancy Kerrigan. Kerrigan kicked off the event with a solo skate…and then invited Santa and his helpers to join her.

“It was really neat to be part of and to see all the young kids. I love being around the kids, because they’re out there doing what I’ve been doing my entire life. They were showing me tricks, and it was pretty magical out there.”

But, she wasn’t the only one to experience the magic. Another legend graced the ice. Boston Bruins great Terry O’Reilly showed the crowd he still had some skills of his own during a special outdoor skate.

“I did some twirling around out there. Nothing beats skating outdoors. It was fun really fun to be out there with the kids,” said O’Reilly. “But, I lost two races to one of the little ones. We were doing laps and she beat me twice.

But the fun did not stop there…in the spirit of the season, Foxwoods introduced “Holiday Wishes,” a program to help special holiday dreams became a reality. And what better reminder than that, to remember what this holiday season is all about.

The rink is open 7 days a week thru February 23rd.
