New Haven police investigate deadly shooting

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– New Haven police are investigating the first homicide of the year. The victim was shot in the chest and there have been no arrests.

Those who live near the crime scene are worried about their safety.

On a holiday celebrating a man who championed non-violence, New Haven police are investigating the murder of 20-year-old Durrell Patrick Law.

“It’s kind of sad that it happened on Martin Luther King’s birthday,” said Amber Knight, who lives in the complex.

“To think that on a day where we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, a man who stood for justice in the face of evil,” said Pastor Troy McNulty.

Behind caution tape, police marked the spot where Law’s young life was cut short.

“He ran out of this parking lot here and fell into the street right about over there and just so happens a nurse happened to be coming by and she rendered assistance,” said Sgt. Vincent Anastasio, New Haven police.

But the nurses help wasn’t enough to save Law. He died at Yale-New Haven Hospital of a gunshot wound to the chest.

While police investigated Monday, they had plenty of people to question. At the time of Law’s murder, many neighbors were home because of the holiday.

While police continue to search for answers, people who live in the neighborhood have questions of their own. They want to know why the shooting happened and if they are safe.

They say it’s not the first time bullets have rang out in this neighborhood.

“This just became like a lot closer, it’s like right over here so it’s happening more often than usual,” said Knight.

The death was a shock, especially for a pastor who came to the scene hoping to console people affected by the shooting. But after learning the victim was Durrell Patrick Law, he needed consoling himself.

“When I came out today, I did not know that this was somebody connected to our family and obviously just getting that news moments ago, I’m reeling from it at this time,” said McNulty.

Law is New Haven’s first homicide of the year. Neighbors hope it will be the last.

New Haven police were investigating a house about a block from where the shooting occurred, calling it a house of suspicion as it relates to this murder.
