70-year-old man falls through ice on lake

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Rescue teams responded to a West Haven lake after a 70-year-old man fell through the ice.

The man fell through the ice on Phipps Lake, located off Woody Lane, just before 10 a.m.

Fire officials said the man was checking to see if the ice was safe for kids in the area to skate on when he fell through.

The man was in the water approximately 20 minutes before rescue crews were able to hook him up with taglines and pull him out.

Officials said the man was conscious the whole time. He is currently at Yale-New Haven Hospital suffering from slight hypothermia.
