Hartford police officer involved in fatal shooting

Hartford, Conn. (WTNH)–Hartford police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place early Saturday morning in the area of Winchester and Vine Street.

Police responded to shots being fired in the area, detecting the gunshots with special technology called Shot Spotter.  When an officer arrived at the scene, they saw a vehicle fleeing the area. A car chase ensued and police pulled the vehicle over, but the suspect got out of the car and started to run.

Police said the officer caught up with the suspect behind a house on Winchester Street, and the suspect fired shots at the officer.

The officer fired back, and the suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

The officer was transported to St. Francis Hospital with minor injuries.

State police have joined in the investigation.

The victim has yet to be identified.

Part of Winchester Street will be closed as police continue to investigate.
