NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– It’s that time of year, time to start thinking about filing your taxes. And working families in the New Haven area can get their taxes done for free thanks to a local program.
This is the 14th year the city’s Volunteer Tax Assistance Coalition or ‘VITA’ is offering free tax preparation help to hard working families.
“Through our VITA sites we save over $590,000 a year to poor people to tax prepares who prepare taxes,” said Mayor Toni Harp,(D) New Haven.
The service is important for those struggling to make ‘ends meet’ who need to make sure they get everything they deserve ‘back’ from Uncle Sam.
Tax pros make sure folks who work but don’t earn high salaries take advantage of things like the earned income tax credit.
You may qualify if you’re the head of a household and make between $36,000 and $46,000 per year.
“The main takeaway for me is how much these folks value every last dollar and how much the state’s earned income credit and federal earned income tax credit combined to create a really powerful incentive to work,” said Matthew Santacroce, VITA Volunteer.
There will be 16 VITA locations set up in the area, most in New Haven but others in East Haven, West Haven and Woodbridge.
As for when to file, the state’s tax commissioner says for most people there is no reason to procrastinate.
“The sooner you file the sooner you get that refund, and if you file electronically and opt to have direct deposit into a bank account, which is safe and secure, you can get your check in three to five days,” said CMSR. Kevin Sullivan, Dept. of Revenue Services.
By the way, the first day you can actually file your taxes is this Friday, January 3st… if you really feel motivated.
