HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut physical therapist has filed a discrimination complaint against a West Hartford senior living center, saying she is being illegally denied health benefits for her wife.
Kerry Considine of Griswold says Brookdale Senior Living, with corporate headquarters in Tennessee, told her the company does not offer benefits to the spouses of same-sex employees.
She has filed a sexual discrimination complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Jim O’Neill, a spokesman for Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, would not comment on the specific complaint. But he said in general any company with a presence in Connecticut, where gay marriage is legal, cannot discriminate in providing benefits based on sexual orientation.
A spokeswoman for Brookdale said she was unaware of the complaint and would look into it.
