Man dies after falling into trash compactor

NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) —  59-year-old Floyd G. Smeeton of New London died after falling into a trash compactor, Thursday afternoon.

Police say the  man was discovered in the trash compactor by another resident around 2:30 PM. Fire officials arrived to 45 Lewis Street to extricate the victim, who was lodged in the hopper of the compactor.


Smeeton was brought to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital where he died from his traumatic injuries.

New London police secured the scene and interviewed possible witnesses.

OSHA also responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the industrial accident.

A post mortem examination has been scheduled by the State of Connecticut Office of the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.
