NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Authorities say an explosion at a New Haven apartment has injured one woman and sparked a two-alarm blaze that was brought under control with the help of firefighters from several stations.
Police spokesman Officer David Hartman says the woman was in the kitchen when the explosion occurred Friday afternoon. She was taken to the Bridgeport Burn Center with burn wounds. Preliminary information indicated that she was in stable condition.
Authorities say initial information suggests that the fire began in the kitchen and may have been accidental. Fire investigators were expected to return to the scene on Saturday.
Police say all 17 people living in the three-story apartment have been accounted for. The building is somewhat unstable and is tentatively scheduled for demolition as early as Saturday or soon after investigators conclude their work.
