Miss Connecticut organizes blood drive

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Miss Connecticut is teaming up with the Red Cross and Gateway Community College to raise awareness about the need for blood during this critical time of the year.

Kaitlyn Tarpey, 2013 Miss Connecticut titleholder, arranged a blood drive that took place February 4th, from 10:30a.m. to 3:30p.m at Gateway Community College.

Tarpey is encouraging the community to donate blood this month and to share their experience via Twitter. She’s asking that donors attach a picture, and use the hashtag #MissCTRedCross. As a special thank you, all participants will be entered in a drawing to win a $200 Visa Gift Card.

Since the beginning of January, winter storms and freezing temperatures have resulted in more than 600 American Red Cross blood drive cancellations, and nearly 20,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations. 26 states, as well as Washington D.C., have had to cancel blood drives, because of weather.
