MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH)– For the last couple of weeks there’s been burglars ripping off people while they are working out at the gym.
It’s happened in several cities and towns around the state and those crooks are still at it.
Gyms are a hot target for thieves, and the rash of break-ins is spreading throughout Connecticut. Milford is just the latest city dealing with the crime.
Police are investigating a string of car burglaries and gym thefts happening at the Edge and LAFitness in Milford.
“I had a lock on the locker and it was broken into and all my stuff was taken out. They went through my wallet and they left a couple things behind,” said Brian Luzietti, a victim.
Those who don’t want to be victims are keeping their things close.
“I don’t put anything in the locker room. I just hold onto everything,” said Charlene Toth.
Detectives say criminals are watching customers in parking lots and scoping out cars. John Gaffney who installs car alarms has seen…
“We have people come in where unfortunately, their windows are broken, things are taken out of their vehicle,” said Gaffney.
Gaffney says car alarms are a great deterrent.
“If a thief walks up and sees a light blinking, maybe he doesn’t want to deal with it and moves on to some other vehicle that doesn’t have an alarm,” said Gaffney.
Police say thieves tend to avoid cars alarms because they attract attention when they go off.
Some people say their car alarm gives them peace of mind.
“It’s an extra comfort. Do the double beep and I know it’s set and if someone does try to break in, the alarm goes off, somebody will hear it,” said Megan Periera.
