Bridgeport officer who shot himself is arrested

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — A Bridgeport police officer who accidentally shot himself in the leg in a crowded bagel shop has been arrested on a gun charge.

State police said Tuesday that they charged 55-year-old Juan Santiago of Bridgeport with unlawful discharge of a firearm in connection with the Dec. 17 incident at the Bagel King on Main Street.

Troopers say Santiago was sitting with three other Bridgeport officers when he mishandled a pistol that fired a shot through his left thigh. No one else was injured. Santiago was treated at a hospital.

State police say Santiago turned himself in Monday. He was released on a promise to appear Feb. 18 in Bridgeport Superior Court.

Santiago’s lawyer, John R. Gulash, declined to comment Tuesday.

Some city residents had called for criminal charges against Santiago.
