Police Warn of IRS Scams

BRANFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Police in Branford are warning of a spike in IRS scams as tax season approaches.

This week a Branford resident was contacted by someone claiming to be an IRS agent. The person was threatened with arrest if she didn’t immediately pay back taxes.

The victim of the scam was coerced into wiring money using “Green Dot Money Pak” at a local Wal-Mart. In less than a few hours the scammers had taken the money and the funds were spent.

In regards to these types of scams Danny Werfel of the IRS says, “We do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer.”

If you think you’ve  been targeted by this scam, contact the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov.
