Finding road salt for purchase may be difficult

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — With more snow and ice in the near future, hardware store workers say it will be difficult to purchase road salt and sand.

A line of customers in a hardware store is a sign that snow is on the way, but this time around there are also signs that suggest fighting this latest round of winter weather will be especially challenging.

“From what I’m hearing there’s a shortage,” said Jordan Tharp.

Jordan Tharp is a manager at Ace Hardware in Middletown with nearly half a decade of experience working in the hardware industry.

“It’s just non-stop,” said Tharp.

He says that if you are looking for materials traditionally used to melt ice, good luck finding it, because the shelves are empty and chances are that you will not be able to find it elsewhere.

no salt sign

“Rock salt, ice melt, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, it’s just gone, Can’t get it,” said Tharp.

Industry experts say that you can also try buying sand, but workers at this store say that it is unlikely that you will be able to get your hands on that either.

“Everywhere else you go like Home Depot, Lowes, Agway, all these other hardware stores, even small hardware stores, you don’t even hear about, they’re out,” said Tharp.

This seems like a winter storm with few options to fight back.
