NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) — A museum for the U.S. Coast Guard is in the works, and it takes a big step forward today.

State and local officials gathered in New London Wednesday to sign a development agreement kicking off the project. The groundbreaking date is set for May 2nd and the museum is expected to be completed in 2017.

“It becomes a great educational tool because the Academy will be able to come down here and study and do research, and I think for the city it’ll be — the ripple effect of having half-a-million visitors annually coming to the museum,” said John Johnson,Coast Guard Museum Association Treasurer.
