BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — Bridgeport Animal Control said it will continue to monitor the living conditions of a dog that has been the focus of hundreds of Facebook comments and dozens of Report It messages to News 8.

The picture that has been shared around on Facebook shows a dog with its snout near the opening of a small door. Text that goes along with the picture describes the “sad lonely dog in a box” and calls the owner “a sick man”.

On its Facebook page, the Bridgeport Animal Control said it has been out to the home in question four times over the past two weeks to inspect the dog’s situation first hand. Pictures and videos of the dog and the shelter have been taken.

They said, “The dog has an enclosure that has two sections. One is a concrete slab that the dog can walk around in. The other part is under shelter with heat, hay, food and water. Our animal control officers checked out the dog and the dog appears to be in good health.

“At this time, however, the owner is not violating any law in the care of his dog.”

News 8 attempted to call the homeowner, but the phone was out of service.

UPDATE: In a follow-up post on its Facebook page, Bridgeport Animal Control said it has been to the home “nearly ten times” over several weeks. “Based on conversations with the staff at the animal shelter, I can state very clearly that this dog is not being abused, neglected or mistreated. This controversy appears to stem from a dispute between neighbors. ”

The dog’s shelter is described as having two areas, an 8′ x 8′ front portion and a second 4′ x 4′ area that is heated.
