Rain, melting snow could flood basements

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Warmer temperatures and rain will help get rid of mounds of snow, but if you don’t take precautions a lot of that moisture could run right into your basement. In this video, News 8’s Kent Pierce has some advice about taking care of your home.

The recommendations, provided by the Avon Fire Department, include:

  • Make sure snow is cleared away from home and other building foundations; and
  • Make sure draining water has a way to escape low-lying and poorly-drained areas so it doesn’t enter buildings.
  • Purchase a pump to safeguard homes/businesses and remove water less than two inches deep.

“We’re expecting warmer temperatures over the next couple of days and there’s also rain in the forecast, so it’s imperative that people prepare for melting snow and possible flooding,” Chief Michael Trick said in a statement.
