Local Ukrainians follow chaos in Kiev

ORANGE, Conn. (WTNH) — The unrest and shootings of civilian protesters in Ukraine are resonating in Connecticut.

Protestors in Kiev have been demanding early elections, a new constitution, opposition within government, and association with the European Union as opposed to an alliance with Russia.

Ukrainian-Americans Maria Antonyshyn and Olena Boyko have been watching live streaming news from Kiev almost around-the-clock from Maria’s home in Orange.

The two are expressing guarded optimism, mixed with skepticism.

Maria and Olena say that the current struggle in Ukraine bears resemblance to the American Revolution, as well as the Civil Rights movement led by Martin Luther King Jr.
