Crumbling ceiling closes Derby parking garage

DERBY, Conn. (WTNH) — A parking garage in Derby is now closed after a local man showed up to a city council meeting carrying a huge chunk of concrete.

He said that the concrete came from the crumbling, city-owned Thompson Place garage ceiling, adding that the place was a safety hazard and needed to be closed.

The council agreed and conducted an engineering study to determine if the 40-year-old structure is safe.

Residents and downtown business owners are asked to park in the municipal lot at the corner of Caroline Street and Hallock Street until engineers complete their work.
