MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Emotional Freedom Technique or tapping is a holistic approach to helping people cope with all kinds of negative feelings including anxiety, stress and troubled relationships
Therapists use it in sessions with clients to help them get through the thought process and empower them to go from feeling negative to positive.
Mary-Megan Marshall has a tough time speaking up for herself.
“I’m afraid that people will get mad at me or that they won’t like me, if I standup for myself,” she said.
Her anxiety causes her to fee; stress in her chest and shoulders. To help her overcome that fear, Holistic Psychotherapist Patty Schein uses emotional freedom technique or tapping.
“Even though I am so scared, I want to crawl up into a ball, I choose to deeply love and accept myself,” says Patty.
She touches acupuncture pressure points, so that the brain links up with positive feelings.
“When you are tapping on the meridians, it’s sending electro-magnetic energy through the connective tissue to the brain and it’s calming down the emotional part of the brain,” said Patty.
“It’s something I can do with Patty and its something I can do at home. It just releases everything. It calms me down, really easily,” said Mary-Megan.
Visualizing and speaking out shifts negative thoughts into positive ones.
“It helps me to understand what you’re thinking and what you’re feeling and to help guide you more and stay on target and to go deeper into some of the issues,” said Patty.
“I’m really concentrating on the words as I’m saying them or trying to feel them as much as possible,” said Mary-Megan.
After a half hour of tapping, a quick scan of her emotions shows a more assertive and empowered Mary-Megan.
“I just feel really strong now. That I didn’t feel before because I was so afraid of what other people would think of me and now I don’t have that fear right now,” she said.
Patty says that this type of therapy really works best for people with some degree of awareness and the ability to tune into themselves.
