Thieves using stolen credit cards to buy gift cards

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH)– Thieves are stealing your credit cards and using them to buy gift cards. This process makes for quick purchases that are nearly impossible to track.

Fairfield police are trying to catch a man caught on camera using someone else’s  stolen credit card to purchase gift cards.

“They steal them. They use them and they discard them,” said Chief Gary MacNamara, Fairfield Police Department.

“They are smashing windows. Going into unlock cars,” said MacNamara.

Police say bandits are targeting a Planet Fitness parking lot on Black Rock Turnpike, breaking into cars and stealing credit cards.

“We know that they’re setting up surveillance in the parking lot waiting for people to go in,” said MacNamara.

The thefts are happening in gym parking lots like the one in Fairfield. Before the victims even have a chance to cancel their credit cards cards, police say the suspects hit stores and buy hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards.

“They can buy these gift cards and rack up $500-1000 and they can spend them whoever they chose to spend them without any threat of getting caught,” said MacNamara.

Police say thieves are setting up surveillance in the parking lots watching your every move.

“If you can see somebody going into the gym, break into the car, you know that there is probably a good hour that you can use that card before someone is going to report it stolen,” said MacNamara.

Some gym goers are wondering if they will be the next victim.

“It’s troubling, it keeps your mind focused out here instead of being in there,” said Carlos Baez, Fairfield resident.

“You got a rush to do your work out now because you’re always thinking of is your car okay. You don’t have peace,” said Pedro Nieves, Fairfield resident.
