BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH)– Police have arrested a Bridgeport man accused of killing a woman in an apparent domestic dispute Saturday night.
Authorities and medical personnel responded to 525 Palisades Avenue around 10:15 pm, where they found the victim lying on the bathroom floor, suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Police have not yet identified the victim. She was pronounced dead on scene.
They say the suspect, 37 year-old Alejandro Velez, of Howard Avenue, was also found unresponsive in the living room with serious injuries. Police found that the front door was barricaded by furniture and had to be opened by force.
He was transported to Bridgeport Hospital and is listed in critical, but stable condition.
Police say this is Bridgeport’s first homicide of the year. They also say this is believed to be an isolated incident, and that there is no danger to the community.
Police say the apartment where the murder occurred is rented by the suspect’s mother, who is currently in Florida.
Velez has an extensive criminal record which includes arson, assault on an officer and other offenses.
He is being charged with murder and held on $1 million bond.
