HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Hamden police are investigating a crash that shut down part of Whitney Avenue early Tuesday morning.

It happened around 8 AM. Police say the driver, a man in his 60s, hit a utility pole and then a retaining wall.

He had to be cut out of his car with the jaws of life.

“Eventually he caught on fire, you could see the fire coming up from the back of the car, crashed into the wall at the apartment complex there. It was horrible.. it was horrible,” said Angela Lee, a witness.

That woman says the accident caused a utility pole to snap, leaving some people without power for hours.

UI has already made the repairs needed to get the lights back on.
