Final big push for Obamacare signup

People looking for health insurance visit Access Health CT in New Haven, Dec. 23, 2013.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH)– Connecticut’s Obamacare organization is making the final big push to get people signed up by next Monday night’s deadline.

“Access Health CT” says they’ve enrolled about 170,000 Connecticut residents as of Monday night.

Before this all started, the estimate was that about 286,000 Connecticut residents had no health insurance.

“First Choice Health” is one of 14 federally qualified health centers around the state that are also helping people sign up for Obamacare. So far, “First Choice” says they’ve enrolled about 40 percent of their uninsured clients.

“I signed up for it…I believe it was January, I didn’t want to…I didn’t want to miss the deadline,” said Lillie Wortham-Kelly, Hartford.

Todd Custer says he can’t remember ever having insurance, he was signing up Tuesday.

“I have asthma and COPD and some other issues that I think, you know, have been sort of let go for a long time and I’d like to be able to deal with some of them,” said Custer.

“Access Health CT” the Connecticut Obamacare organization has doubled the number of people at their call in center to over 300 and have seen call volume steadily increase as the deadline draws near.

Last night they enrolled up close to 1,200 people for private carrier coverage.

“That is basically double what we typically do and we’ve seen a day to day increase in web activity of about twenty percent,” said Kevin Counihan, Access Health CT.

The call-in centers will be staffed throughout the weekend.

The walk in centers in New Haven and New Britain will also be open this weekend. If you do not sign up by the deadline you will be facing a hefty penalty when you do your federal income taxes next year.

Some people are reporting that it might be cheaper to pay the penalty that can be as low as $95 but that’s not the case for many people.

If you are a couple making $65,000 a year, the first year fine will be $450. It doubles to $900 next year and goes up to $1,125 in 2016.
