Plans for new Sandy Hook school unveiled

NEWTOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — Architects Tuesday night unveiled designs for the new Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The renderings, which were presented to the public building and site commission, reflect the input of hundreds of residents.

Nothing’s final yet but things are moving fast. The old school was demolished last year.

In drafting designs, the architecture firm, Svigals and Partners, said it tried to consider the town itself and the beautiful river that runs through it, as well as other nature-driven themes.

“As soon as you get on the site, you see the building beyond embracing you,” said Alana Konefal of Svigals and Partners. “You walk in, and you are immediately connected with nature.”

The commission says the renderings meet the school board’s strict specifications. It’s important that the school be more than just appealing.

One major issue with the school’s design is security. Although the issue did come up, it will be more thoroughly vetted at a future meeting.
