Arrests made in Putnam toddler death


PUTNAM, Conn. (WTNH)– A father and a step mother have been arrested Thursday, in the death of a Putnam toddler.

Police say they responded to a call  that a 2 1/2 year-old child not breathing around 11 AM on March 26th. The caller was the child’s step mother Renee Peterson, 32, who provided CPR under the instruction of the 911 dispatcher before EMS arrived.

The child was taken to Day Kimball Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

After an investigation, arrest warrants were granted for Peterson and the child’s father, 30-year-old David Mahan.

Peterson was arrested and charged with risk of injury, reckless endangerment, and cruelty to persons. She was held on $25,000 bond.

Mahan was arrested in Douglas, Massachusetts as a fugitive and will be extradited back to Connecticut to face the same charges.
