Attorney: Stamford to pay $230K to settle lawsuit

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — An attorney for a woman who accused a Stamford police officer of punching her says the city has agreed to pay her a $230,000 settlement.

Antonio Ponvert III announced Wednesday that the out-of-court settlement resolves a lawsuit against Stamford and officer Greg Zach by Brenda Mazariegos of Norwalk.

A lawsuit resulted in a hung jury last year on some charges while other charges were dismissed. A second trial was scheduled to begin this month.

Telephone messages left with attorneys for the city and Zachs were not immediately returned. The city did not admit wrongdoing.

Mazariegos says she was attempting to enter the parking lot of her employer in 2009 when Zach ordered her out of her car and punched her in the face.

Zach testified that Mazariegos was the aggressor.
