ORANGE, Conn. (WTNH) – Police have identified the body found in Lake Wepawaug April 12 as the man who apparently fled the scene of a one-car accident last month.

Twenty-seven-year-old Vaughn Porteous of Hamden was reported missing by family members April 1, which police said was about two weeks after he crashed his car on the Merritt Parkway in Orange and left the scene.

State police said the vehicle sustained heavy front end damage and was abandoned at the entrance to a rest stop near exit 56. There was also damage to the metal beam guardrail, police said.

The Hamden man’s body was discovered floating facedown and it “appeared to have been in the water for a prolonged period,” police said.

The state medical examiner’s office ruled the death an accidental drowning but said the investigation will remain open pending toxicology results, which can take several weeks.
