NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH)– A New Britain man was charged with murder Saturday, after police say he strangled his wife to death.

Police say they responded to the second floor of 40 Newfield Street around 2:18 AM to do a welfare check after a family member reported that the resident was despondent and may be a danger.

When police entered the apartment, they found a 33-year-old Johana Gallego unconscious and unresponsive. EMS was called in, but shortly after she was presumed dead.

An initial investigation revealed that Gallego had be strangled. Her husband, 41-year-old Luis Velez, was identified as the suspect.

Velez was later arrested at 1 PM without incident and charged with one count of murder. He was held on $750,000 bond and will appear in court Monday.
