Police arrest fatal hit and run driver in Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH) —  The Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is investigating a fatal motor vehicle versus pedestrian collision that happened on April 20, 2014 at 6:48PM on Woodland Avenue near Atlantic Street.

A 70 year old female Stamford resident was crossing Woodland Avenue when a 2002 Chrysler Voyager minivan traveling west on Woodland Avenue drove over the double yellow line into the eastbound lane to pass stopped cars when it struck the pedestrian. The Chrysler continued westbound in the eastbound lane until it struck a 2008 Nissan Versa that had stopped to allow the pedestrian to cross the street.

The Chrysler fled the scene and was followed by a witness who called 911 to report the Chrysler’s license plate and description.

Approximately one hour later Stamford Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation personnel located the Chrysler in a residential driveway on Durant Street.

Yolanda McDowell, age 45 of Durant Street was taken into custody at her residence.
McDowell was charges with Manslaughter in the Second Degree with a Motor Vehicle and Felony Evading Responsibility. She has been held on $250,000.00 bond for arrangement at Stamford Superior Court on April 20, 2014.

Numerous witnesses assisted Stamford Police in this investigation.
