HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Supporters of a transgender teenager who is jailed in Connecticut say they’ll be demanding her release during a protest outside the state Department of Children and Families in Hartford.
A judge ordered the 16-year-old girl to be detained at the state women’s prison in Niantic with no criminal charges earlier this month at the request of DCF officials, who said the girl was too violent to keep in DCF custody. DCF Commissioner Joette Katz says the girl, identified only as Jane Doe, repeatedly assaulted girls and staff members.
A group called Justice for Jane says it plans to demonstrate outside DCF offices at 1 p.m. Friday. The girl’s supporters say she suffered years of abuse under state custody and they’re demanding that she placed in a safe environment with therapy.
