Officials searching for man who jumped in river

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — Police say a man who was standing in the middle of a road jumped into the Naugatuck River shortly after 9 p.m. Friday as police began to approach him.

Naugatuck emergency officials are helping Waterbury police and fire departments search for the man in the “very high and very strong” waters of the river, says Waterbury Deputy Police Chief Chris Corbett.

It’s believed that the current has carried the man into Naugatuck, Corbett said. It’s unknown what prompted the man to apparently flee police.

We’ll provide more updates as they are made available.
