NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH)– A 12-year-old girl and her dog were rescued by the Coast Guard Sunday, after their canoe capsized near Ocean Beach in New London.

The Coast Guard says around 6:20 PM, they launched a rescue helicopter from Cape Cod, a rescue boat crew from New London and contacted a passenger ferry in the area after they received a report that two possible people appeared to be in distress.

The passenger ferry also reported they saw a canoe capsize and a girl and a dog in the water. The girl was not wearing a life jacket.

The Coast Guard says a ferry crew member then quickly deployed a life ring to the victim and the New London boat crew arrived on scene to rescue her.

“Luckily the John H ferry was there to provide the girl with a life ring, increasing her chances of survival,” said Lt. Daniel Tavernier, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station New London. “It’s extremely important to always be prepared for unexpected emergencies, especially by wearing a life jacket.

The girl was showing signs of shock and hypothermia so she was brought back to the New London station where medical services were waiting to treat her.

A good Samaritan also located the dog and returned it to the owners.

The Coast Guard urges everyone to wear life jackets which increase your chance of survival and make you more visible to first responders.
