PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A severe fire that engulfed a three-story home in Providence could not stop a cat from delivering eight kittens during the commotion.

Firefighters found flames coming from the first floor when they arrived at the scene Friday morning. The fire quickly engulfed the rest of the triple-decker, forcing firefighters to evacuate the building and continue to attack the blaze from outside.

Resident Ruthann Santiago tells WPRI-TV that the cat began having the kittens shortly after the fire broke out.

Santiago said she discovered that the cat had delivered some of the kittens when she went to pick up the pet to flee the burning home.

The 11 people living in the building got out safely and are receiving emergency housing and their basic needs from the Red Cross.
