New schedule for Metro North, Shore Line East

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–  Your next ride on Metro-North may get you where you need to go on time or even better a little earlier than what you’re used to, that’s because there’s a new schedule.

New schedule times on Metro-North are now in place. It’s all part of a plan to make the rail more reliable for riders.

“A couple weeks ago my car broke down with a really bad engine problem and you know, I’ve been relying on the train a lot,” said Allen Brown of New Haven.

That reliability is crucial for Brown, a student. “I have a job you know as a college student I need the money really, really bad. For me to be on time to my job is really important.”

Metro-North says the new schedules are designed to provide improved performance. Speed requirements, running times, and rail construction were all taken into consideration. To accommodate connecting passengers, Shore Line East has also changed its schedule so riders can go from one train to the next.

“It’ll be good for them. They’ve had a lot of issues I’ve heard lately. It will definitely be good for the commuters to get in on time,” said Andrew Benoit, Hamden.

“I hope so for them yeah because I have heard a lot of bad stories,” said Sandy Benoit.

The new schedules are part of a “100 Day Action Plan” launched earlier this year by Metro North. It comes after a report was released in March, which found the railroad prioritized on time performance, over safety.

In addition to the new schedules, Metro-North says they also will be accommodating track inspections and maintenance.

According to Metro-North the new schedules will be beneficial for about 83% of commuters on the New Haven line who travel during the morning peak hours. That’s because your trip from Connecticut into Grand Central Station will be a little faster.

On the flip side, 12% of commuters will see a slower trip. Still, riders say they’re happy about the changes. They just hope everything works the way it’s supposed to.

“It’s very important and it’s very key. I feel as though it’s a great move,” said Benoit.
