Suspect running from police drowns in Thames River

LEDYARD, Conn. (AP) — A man from Virginia drowned after police say he jumped into the Thames River while fleeing from officers.

Police say 24-year-old Jarmal Robinson of Norfolk, Virginia took off after Ledyard police tried to make a routine traffic stop just before 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Police say they chased Robinson into Montville, where his car ran a red light and collided with another. The occupants of that car were taken to a local hospital with what police say were minor injuries.

Police say Robinson then fled on foot and jumped into the river, where he tried to swim away.

Police say he went under the water about 30-feet from shore and did not resurface. He was pulled from the water by the Coast Guard, but could not be revived.
