UConn grads get special commencement speaker

Storrs, Conn. (WTNH) – Some UConn students got an out-of-this world commencement over the weekend when a famous alumnus delivered this year’s graduation remarks.

Astronaut Rick Mastracchio gave a commencement speech from the International Space Station to the School of Engineering.

He told the students, “Remember, all of those small steps and hard work can bring you a long, long way.”

Then he addressed parents, saying, “I know you’re proud of your graduate, but you should also be impressed by their accomplishments.”

The state’s flagship school awarded more than 7,000 diplomas to students.

Mastracchio earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from UConn in 1982. He’s wrapping up his fourth trip to space.
