Theft of playground sign prompts public response

MYSTIC, Conn. (WTNH)– There was an outpouring of support for a playground built for a victim of the Sandy Hook tragedy that had its peace sign stolen. About 30 handmade signs have gone up in replace of it.

The sign which was stolen from there had a peace sign on it and it said Love, Grace. But as you can see, there’s still a whole lot of love to go around.

Wednesday was Liam Young’s first time at the Mystic playground dedicated to Grace McDonnell.

For him a fun place to play…

“My mom brought me here,” said Liam. When asked what was his favorite part, he said, “all these slides.”

Liam and his mom were at another playground the day the Sandy Hook tragedy unfolded, she learned about it later.

“Brought us to tears,” said Michelle Young, Stonington.

Which is why she wanted to bring Liam there especially after hearing that someone had stolen the purple peace sign at the entrance to the playground.

A man claimed responsibility and called Grace’s mother telling her the Sandy Hook shootings were a hoax.

“I think it’s insanity. I think it’s horrible,” said  Young.

A replacement sign has been ordered. In the meantime the signs surround its posts read “We remember you Grace.” “You live on in us Grace.”

“It’s so moving. It’s it’s nice to see people in the community coming together and just making such a beautiful tribute for little Grace and everybody,” said Young.

Some have even offered to pay for the new sign. Generosity, resiliency, Grace.

“Today’s the day that Liam and I are going to come down here and spread our peace and love. To let everybody know this playground is for everybody,” said  Young.

Perhaps the best sign that Grace’s spirit will always endure is that the children continue to come.
