SWAT team responds to Newington standoff

NEWINGTON, Conn. (WTNH)– Police evacuated an apartment complex in Newington this morning after a barricaded man shot himself inside his home.

The SWAT team surrounded the man’s apartment in Gloucester Village Apartments at 718 Church Street. When officers got inside the home, they found him shot.

The man was taken to a local hospital and there is no word the severity of his injuries.

Neighbors say the man has two kids, ages 15 and 20. They were in the home but managed to get out safely.

Twelve apartments were evacuated around 4 AM after police received the 911 call. Residents weren’t allowed back in until around 10:30 AM.

Several other residents were not evacuated but told to stay inside their apartments.

Dunkin Donuts also sent a truck to the scene to feed the people involved.
