MYSTIC, Conn. (WTNH)–The size of the American flag at Cardinal Honda may be impressive, but it’s the effort that hoisted the flag over downtown Mystic which may be just as impressive. Cardinal Honda donated another flag after one was stolen from downtown Mystic’s Liberty Pole sometime during the night of May 9th.
“People have given their lives for that flag and it’s just, it’s tragic so we’re happy it made us all feel good to make that donation,” said Steve Luft of Cardinal Honda.
Police are now trying to track down the thief. It is the fourth time a flag was stolen from Mystic’s Liberty Pole.
“It’s unfathomable that someone would actually do that,” said visitor Steve Gale.
Twice before the flag was returned. But the Groton car dealership wasn’t waiting to see if that happened this time. Instead donating the ten by fifteen foot flag which could have cost the Mystic Flag Committee $300 if it had to buy a new one.
“It’s important that the community not feel it missing over the holiday weekend that’s coming up as well. So it was nice that we could get it back lying where it belonged immediately and the employees here at Cardinal Honda make that possible,” said Kimberly Cardinal of Cardinal Honda.
This is not the first time Cardinal Honda has paid it forward. Last year, the company replaced flags stolen along New London’s waterfront just before the city’s Schooner Festival.
“That’s just what we do here,”Luft said.
“This is also my first time here and just to see this is quite nice,” Gale said.
In addition to donating flags, Cardinal Honda also has a program in which is loans out flags to organizations like the boy scouts or girl scouts which might need one for an event.
