HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Police say an estranged boyfriend shot a woman inside a crowded Family Dollar store then turned the gun on himself Saturday afternoon.

Hartford Deputy Police Chief Brian Foley said the woman was shot multiple times in the chest and is listed in critical condition at Hartford Hospital. She has been identified as Sharon Rentas, 41 of Hartford. The suspect shot himself once in the chest and is listed in stable condition, also at Hartford Hospital. He has been identified as 51 year old Elvin Perez-Soto, also of Hartford. According to police, Perez-Soto and the victim have been married for 11 years, and were in the process of separating.

The incident happened about noon Saturday inside the store at Park and Lafayette streets.

Upwards of 100 people were inside the store at the time of the shooting, including the woman’s children, Foley said. He said a clerk grabbed the kids and took them to safety as the shots rang out.

“I heard seven gunshots,” said Brenda Girouard. “Everybody said started running, running, running, I ran.”

Perez-Soto has a $1,000,000 bond.
