Memorial Day a happy celebration along the shore

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–It’s not officially summer, but, on a Memorial Day that looks and feels like today, people like Bill Mazziotti say “let’s make it summer.”

“In the winter, I’m a school crossing guard and we had a rough winter with the snow and the cold. I’m happy that we got the weather,” Mazziotti said.

With this weather, there are a lot of calm, happy people. Some relaxing, reading books, bathing on the rocks, and some in the sand by the water.

“Not a lot of people have gone in the water yet, but it’s a good time,” said lifeguard Enrique Calle, who has been counting down the days to kick off the season as a lifeguard at West Haven Beach.

“It’s a good spot. West Haven is definitely a nice beach. It may not be like so commercial to the public, but it’s a nice town.”

A place that seems to be pleasing everyone today, from fisherman, to walkers, and joggers.

“It’s a beautiful day, I’m enjoying it, doing my regular workout on the beach here. It’s beautiful,” Norman Childers.

And don’t forget bikers. We’re talking cyclists and motorcyclists out and about having fun, and celebrating the meaning of Memorial Day.

“You’ve got to remember what the day is really all about. I like to get my flag out there and let everybody see it. That’s what I do.”
