NEW MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A man died in New Milford Tuesday after he was apparently electrocuted when he stepped out of his vehicle on Van Car Road, police said.

Forty-nine-year-old Kevin Mateer, of New Milford, was pronounced deceased at New Milford Hospital.

Police said the man’s car caught fire after electrical wires were pulled down onto the vehicle about 7 p.m. Tuesday. The man was forced to leave the vehicle and was electrocuted as he fled the burning car, according to police.

“The victim had no options in this case,” New Milford police Lt. Lawrence Ash said Wednesday. “He did the best he could and unfortunately the odds weren’t with him. Everyone is saddened by this event, it’s horrific.”

The New Milford Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, officials are working to address the widespread damaged caused by Tuesday night’s powerful storms.

“Our goal right now is to assess the damage in the area and get the roads open,” Ash said. “We probably have about a half a dozen roads that remain closed.”
