HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — State police are accepting donated wheelchairs at barracks across Connecticut this weekend to benefit those in need.

Troopers will be collecting wheelchairs at the barracks from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday as part of the annual 1,000 Wheels Day sponsored by the Bloomfield nonprofit group Chariots of Hope. The goal is 300 wheelchairs.

State police and Chariots of Hope collected more than 180 wheelchairs last year. Wheelchairs donated to the charity group are sent to those in need around the world.

Chariots of Hope and Stamford-based AmeriCares delivered 15 wheelchairs last September to a hospital in Bangladesh.

Chariots of Hope says there are millions of children and adults around the world who could use wheelchairs now sitting in people’s attics and basements.
