Firefighters compete at family fun day

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WTNH)– Seven fire departments from towns in Southern Connecticut made their way to Old Saybrook Sunday, but it wasn’t for an emergency call.

It’s part of the 8th annual “Firefighter Competition and Family Fun Day” at Clark Memorial Field.

The volunteer fire departments took part in course and obstacle training. All of it timed by judges.

While the competition helps strengthen the relationship between towns, it also serves as an important training tool.

“Each event here is geared toward a specific task we would have to do on the fire ground, whether it be putting water on the fire itself, pulling water out of a source or simple task like dragging dummies or stuff like that which you would do in a real situation,” said Jerry Gil, event chairman.

News 8 has learned that after all was said and done, firefighters from Guilford were the winners of the competition.
