WATERFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — It’s said one in 30 million is the chance you have of finding a rare yellow lobster. Well, one fisherman in Connecticut has beaten the odds.

He found it along the coast of Black Point in Niantic, an area he has frequented for fishing in the last 10 years.

The captain of the boat has been fishing since 1996 but when he pulled up one of the traps this weekend he got something he never ever expected.

Jere Lacoske couldn’t believe his eyes when he opened the trap.lobster Rare yellow lobster found off Niantic coast

“First I thought it was a joke. I said hopefully… joke is it cooked or is it plastic? And then it was in with six other lobsters so it was kind of hiding in the corner,” said Lacoske.

The yellow and orange lobster hauled in off of Black Point in Niantic.

“In about 75 feet of water I caught her,” said Lacoske.

A chicken lobster if you go by size, about a pound and a quarter.

“It’s a female lobster and she’s in great shape. As you see she’s very active,” said Lacoske.

“Well they say it’s one in 30 million,” said Capt. John Wadsworth, Mago Point Marina.

Capt John Wadsworth owns Mago Point Marina in Waterford where Jere keeps his boat. He’s never seen a lobster this color before it was cooked.

“This is very very unusual. Plus Jere’s very unusual,” said Wadsworth.

He kids of course. Jere is hoping to share this rare find with other seafood or rather marine life lovers. Mystic Aquarium already has one along with a couple of other uniquely colored crustaceans so he has to find another place which might put it on display. He’s thinking Project Oceanography at Avery Point.

little lobster       “See if they’ll take it down there and show the kids down there for a while at least,” said Lacoske.

If it turns out Project O isn’t interested in her Jere says she still is not going to be someone’s dinner. He’s going to put her back in the water and then maybe someone else will have the thrill of finding her in their trap.
