Interview with Meteorologist Sam Kantrow

I was very fortunate to be picked by Sam to be a contributor to and to meet him personally. I was very happy when he said yes to doing an interview so we all can get to know him a little better.

What made you go into Meteorology?

My love for meteorology began at age 2 when a tornado in Hamden touched down right near my house. This was the Hamden tornado, and I always remember my parents telling me the story. I think that’s when I got the bug.

 Where did you attend college?

I went to Western Connecticut State University and graduated in 2009.

When did you start with Storm Team 8?

I started in February of 2011

What is the most enjoyable part of your job at WTNH?

All aspects of my job are great…The only thing I don’t like is having to wake up at 2am and wear make-up. Every day is different, every day has challenges, but the rewards are incredible!

How famous do you feel driving around in the Mobile Weather Lab? (My favorite question.)

The weather lab is a really funny tool. I have to remind myself all the time that it’s not the most inconspicuous vehicle in the world. People stare at it all the time, take photos, shout out the car window, etc!

What is most exciting or memorable moment in your career thus far?

I think the most memorable moment was the blizzard in February of 2013…we get snow in Connecticut but this was SNOW! Usually a foot or two will cause issues for a few days but I’ve never in my life seen a storm that literally shut the entire state down for days!

Where do you yourself in the next 5 years?

I know this seems cliche, but in 5 years I see myself here still. When I was 6 years old, my parents asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. My response was “I want to be a weather man at News Channel 8”. The rest is history!

Anything you would like to add?

Don’t eat yellow snow? Just kidding!!

Thank you so much, Sam, for taking the time to let us know more about yourself!
